A sewer camera inspection is the most important diagnostic tool in drain cleaning. It eliminates guesswork, prevents unnecessary excavation, protects pipe walls from blind snake penetration in deteriorated lines, and — crucially — it tells you exactly what is in the pipe before you put any equipment into it.

How Push-Rod Sewer Camera Systems Work

A push-rod camera system consists of a rigid-flex fiberglass cable (typically 200 feet long) with a self-leveling waterproof camera head mounted at the tip. The camera head contains:

The Inspection Procedure: Step by Step

  1. Cleanout access: The camera enters through the sewer cleanout — a capped 4-inch pipe in the yard, basement, or crawlspace. If no cleanout exists, the nearest toilet is pulled as an access point.
  2. Line flow test: Water is run in the house while the technician observes flow inside the pipe — confirming flow direction and identifying any surcharging water that indicates a downstream restriction.
  3. Camera advance: The operator slowly pushes the camera head down the mainline, continuously observing the monitor. The camera is advanced at approximately 2 feet per second in clear sections, slower around bends and through defective sections.
  4. Defect marking: When a defect is identified, the operator notes the footage counter reading, activates the sonde locator at the surface to mark the GPS position, and records detailed camera footage of the defect from multiple angles.
  5. Full-line coverage: The camera is advanced to the municipal tie-in point (typically 60–120 feet from cleanout for residential) to verify the entire lateral is inspected.
  6. Report generation: The technician produces a written report documenting each finding, its footage location, severity grade, and recommended action.

What Camera Inspections Find: Every Major Defect Type

Tree Root Intrusion

High Priority

Appears as white, fibrous masses growing into the pipe from joint openings or cracks. Fine hair roots at entry points indicate early-stage infiltration; dense masses fill the pipe bore. Requires root cutting + jetting + chemical inhibitor.

Pipe Belly (Sag)

High Priority

Visible as a low-point where standing water pools in the pipe bottom, with the camera looking "uphill" to exit the sag. Solids accumulate in bellies, causing recurring blockages. Requires excavation and pipe resetting.

Offset / Misaligned Joint

Medium Priority

Two pipe sections that have shifted out of alignment — visible as a step or ledge inside the pipe. Small offsets (< 50%) cause debris accumulation; large offsets prevent camera passage and block flow. May require excavation.

Mineral Scale Buildup

Medium Priority

Appears as white-gray, irregular crystalline coating on pipe walls, reducing interior diameter. Moderate scale is removable with high-pressure chain-flail jetting; severe scale may require mechanical descaling tools.

Grease / FOG Accumulation

Yellow-brown, shiny, layered coating on pipe walls — typically thickest on the bottom half. Interior diameter significantly reduced. Cleared with high-temperature hydro jetting (grease emulsification mode).

Cracked or Fractured Pipe

High Priority

Visible as a line, split, or hole in the pipe wall. Soil and root infiltration through cracks. May indicate imminent collapse. Requires spot excavation and repair or trenchless pipe lining.

Collapsed Pipe Section

Immediate Action

Camera cannot advance — the pipe has physically collapsed. Common in Orangeburg, severely deteriorated clay, and old cast iron. Requires excavation and replacement. No jetting or snaking can resolve this.

Foreign Object Blockage

Medium Priority

Wipes, toys, hygiene products visible in the pipe. Often lodged at bends, root masses, or belly sections. Retrievable with cable augering or hydro jetting depending on material and location.

Infiltration / Exfiltration

High Priority

Ground water visible entering through joints or cracks (infiltration) adds I/I load to the sewer system. Sewage leaking outward (exfiltration) is an environmental and health hazard. Requires pipe lining or repair.

Camera Inspection vs. Hydrostatic Testing

A hydrostatic pressure test (plugging the line and filling with water to test for leaks) confirms whether a pipe leaks but doesn't tell you where or why. Camera inspection does both — it locates defects precisely and characterizes them visually. For any sewer diagnostic purpose, camera inspection provides more actionable information than pressure testing alone.

When Should You Get a Sewer Camera Inspection?

Industry Standard: NASSCO (National Association of Sewer Service Companies) recommends a full sewer camera inspection every 5 years for homes with no known issues, and annually for homes with trees within 10 feet of the sewer lateral.
