This chemical shift causes calcium carbonate (CaCO₃) to precipitate out of solution and adhere to the pipe wall in a crystalline matrix. The reaction is:

The scale forms initially as a soft, porous deposit. Over months, additional calcium ions bond to the existing layer, and the deposit hardens to a rock-like consistency (Mohs hardness ~3). At this stage, it cannot be dissolved by household acid cleaners in any practical timeframe.

Scale rarely blocks a pipe by itself in healthy pipes. What it does is create an uneven, rough pipe surface on which debris catches.
